The data below was published by the CT Department of Education in November 2007 and first published at the Cafe on February 20th 2008.

The upper panel lists the lowest ranking school districts in terms of per pupil spending – data compiled by the State of Connecticut, Department of Education and published in November 2007. The calculation for Woodstock is based upon an the entire K-12 Education budget of $13,847,656 (2006-2007; a lower figure than the buget5 approved by the town) and 1432 elementary, middle school and high school / Academy students (Average Daily Attendence). All CT districts have been calculated exactly the same way. A pdf list ranking all 166 school districts in one spreadsheet can be found on the left at the bottom of the list of Pages entitled “Per Pupil Spending…”
The lower (right) panel is the estimated Woodstock per pupil spending comparing the Academy and the K-8 schools after applying each schools’ relative SPED and transportation costs based on the ratio of students in each school. For consistency with the per pupil expeditures in the upper panel, the per pupil expeditures in the lower (right) panel are based upon the Education budget reported by the State of $13,847,656, not the $14 million + originally approved for the 2006-07 Woodstock education budget. The ranking given in the lower panel places both the Academy and the K-8 in their relative postions among the 166 districts.
Even if one assumes that high school students cost more to educate than K-8 students, it can be concluded from these comparisons that both the Academy and the K-8 are under funded compared to other schools around the State - relatively speaking, that is.
In 2006-07 Woodstock ranked 160th out of 166 school districts. Woodstock outspent Seymour by $15, Tolland $121, Lebanon by $155, Wolcott by $493, Ansonia $535 and Watertown by $770. The median per pupil (#83 – Guilford) spending is $11489 or $1820 more than Woodstock. The average per pupil spending was $13524 or $3855 more than Woodstock in 2006-07.
