Here are some audited “facts” from the Ct. Dept. of Education website: (www.csde.gov)
These pk-8 per pupil expenditures are from 2006-07 which are the latest data available by the state:
Woodstock:(4th)
$10,106 per pupil (instructional costs) plus debt service of $1078
Pomfret: (3rd)
$11,234 per pupil plus debt service of $679
Eastford:(second place)
$13,563 per pupil plus debt service of 0$ (way to go Eastford!)
Canterbury: (the winner)
$14,649 per pupil plus debt service of $961
Brooklyn:(loser)
$9920 per pupil plus a debt service of $1588
Minus the debt service out and you will see that Woodstock is not spending a whole heck of a lot on students.
Further, another interesting discovery is that while I have been concerned about how much our town spends on SPED, apparently it is not as much as other towns.
Here is some more data (from the Ct. Dept. of Ed. website) to support this fact.
*again, 06-07 is the latest data available.
SPED expenditures pk-8 (% of entire budget):
Woodstock: 16.7%
Pomfret: 23.3%
Eastford: 20.0%
Canterbury: 21.7%
Brooklyn: 17.7%
What do Cafe readers make of these FACTS?
The preK-8 education expenditures per pupil as it can be viewed at the DOE site.

Taxpayer says “Woodstock is not spending a whole heck of a lot on students. Further, another interesting discovery is that while I have been concerned about how much our town spends on SPED, apparently it is not as much as other towns”. So Taxpayer has finally looked up a few simple facts and discovered that they are true! I guess we should be grateful that he is using facts and not expressing his opinions, which are based on conjecture, speculation and hypothesis (i.e., made up).
So now the question is what will Taxpayer think this spring when the reduction in state education aid to towns, estimated at $200+ million statewide, hammers the K-8 public education system, while the Academy, which has no review or limitation of its expenditures, launches its $20+ million expansion program for athletic fields, a science center, a sewer line, and, based on the advice of one prominent Trustee, buys all the real estate around the campus that becomes available.
Does Taxpayer think there is anything wrong with this?
