Woodstock Elementary School County Winner in CT State Fire Prevention Poster Contest
We are proud to announce that WES has a county winner in the annual CT State Fire Prevention Poster contest! Cassidy Thorpe, a fourth grader in Mrs. Hayes’ class, designed the winning poster. The selection process was phased. First, a winning poster was picked by student for each fourth grade classroom. Staff member judges then had the difficult job of selecting the final one. Cassidy Thorpe’s poster was chosen to represent WES, and the poster committee selected hers as the winner of the Windham County competition! Cassidy, her parents, Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. Herklots attended the Annual Award Presentation Lunch in March. Cassidy will receive a $200 Savings Bond and her poster will be in next year’s CT State Fire Prevention calendar. This project makes meaningful connections between art, language arts and everyday public safety awareness. Every fourth grade student received a certificate of participation, a calendar, a folder and a pen for their hard work. We are all excited that Cassidy is representing WES and Windham County!

Woodstock Middle School Students Reach Out to Wounded Soldiers
Students at Woodstock Middle School often exhibit random acts of kindness. This one was too “cool” not to share with the community. Read the rest of this entry »
Under the fine coaching of Mr. Donald Piche the boys won two state chess tournaments last month and placed 3rd in a third tournament: First Place in the Western Massachusetts Scholastic Championships Grade 5-6 , 3rd place in the Rhode Island State Championships Grade 5-6 division, and First place in the K-6 Connecticut State Chess Championships-Eastern Division. Many thanks to Coach Piche for his time and dedication to the kids.

“The Board of Finance voted Tuesday to use surplus funds to make up an estimated $458,000 shortfall in the proposed $21 million 2009-10 budget, rather than make additional cuts.”
“To make up for the shortfall, the board voted 4-2 to use $217,393 in leftover funds from Woodstock Elementary renovations completed four years ago, and to withdraw $241,270 from the general fund.”

Remarks of President Barack Obama
A New Foundation
Tuesday, April 14th, 2009
Washington, DC
It has now been twelve weeks since my administration
began. And I think even our critics would agree that at
the very least, we’ve been busy. In just under three
months, we have responded to an extraordinary set of
economic challenges with extraordinary action – action that
has been unprecedented in both its scale and its speed.
I know that some have accused us of taking on too much at
once. Others believe we haven’t done enough. And many
Americans are simply wondering how all of our different
programs and policies fit together in a single, overarching
strategy that will move this economy from recession to
recovery and ultimately to prosperity.
So today, I want to step back for a moment and explain our
strategy as clearly as I can. I want to talk about what
we’ve done, why we’ve done it, and what we have left to
do. I want to update you on the progress we’ve made, and
be honest about the pitfalls that may lie ahead.
And most of all, I want every American to know that each
action we take and each policy we pursue is driven by a
larger vision of America’s future – a future where
sustained economic growth creates good jobs and rising
incomes; a future where prosperity is fueled not by
excessive debt, reckless speculation, and fleeing profit,
but is instead built by skilled, productive workers; by
sound investments that will spread opportunity at home and
allow this nation to lead the world in the technologies,
innovations, and discoveries that will shape the 21st
century. That is the America I see. That is the future I
know we can have.
To understand how we get there, we first need to understand
how we got here.
from Doug Zimmerman
