Pugnacity at the Polling Place

Four years ago the petitioning candidate was a CPS candidate running for first Selectman. This year another CPS petitioning candidate, Mr. Richardson, is running for the Board of Finance, along with his two supporters who signed Richardson’s petition, Democrats Ms. Wholean and Mr. Powers (candidates for alternate positions on the BOF). These two along with Mr. Kaeding devised a plot to have two DTC nominees, Dick Cass and Charles Super, in order to split and dilute the Democrat vote so that petitioning candidate Richardson would win the second BOF seat.

Last Tuesday’s election was yet another wonderful affirmation of the strength of our country’s political design. Whether the result was what I was hoping for or not, I marvel each election at the sheer genius of the concept. Everytime I watch the news, I am reminded at how fortunate we are in this country. People in other countries risk getting shot, having their homes leveled or any number of other horrible intimidations just to get to a polling location and vote. The true validation of democracy’s virtue is that they are and, continue to be, willing to do so.

Once again though, I have to face the fact that sometimes we are closer to those struggling for democratic representation than I would like to admit. Read the rest of this entry »
