I think that these are truly scary times, and no one with any sense will go up against Obama. I mean, the GOP has to field someone, but they don’t really have a better plan to offer, and they know it. My opinion is that the present line up are all idiots, and only there to keep Ron Paul out. God knows we don’t want that Libertarian changing the face of our party.

In general, presidents who enjoy a 50% approval rating are not about to be kicked out. It will all depend on the shape of the economy next November. If it continues to improve, President Obama is good shape. If it declines he may be in trouble if Romney is the nominee.
Despite the Republican obstructionism for the last several years, doing anything they could to keep the economy from improving so they could win this election, the economy is slowly turning around. Whoever wins this next election is likely to enjoy the benefits of that recovery. If the Democrats win they will give credit to President Obama’s current policies. If the Republicans win they will give credit to that guy’s policies (whoever he is and whatever policies he brings to the table).
Thanks,
Kevin

It’s interesting that Mapes would combine Nixon and W on the same ticket. These were two of the worst Presidents of the USA. There are interesting similarities in their Presidencies.
1. The price of gas skyrocketed from the norm. Here is the rise in oil prices during 2007 and 2008 during the Bush presidency published at the Cafe. http://www.woodstockctcafe.com/2008/08/17/what-will-heating-oil-cost-on-nov-1st-in-woodstock/ . During Nixon’s presidency we had our first gas crisis, a historic one, when we saw for the first time long lines at gas stations.
2. Nixon prolonged the Vietnam war using the slogan “Peace with Honor”. The record now shows that Kennedy wanted to extract us from that situation but then Johnson took over and he did the opposite. Bush not only ran two long wars but he started one on a false premise which then ran the country into the ground causing a lot of people to go broke and lose their homes.
3. Both were Republicans but not conservative based on their actions.
4. Both had horribibly devisive Vice Presidents. W’s VP should have been thrown in jail. Many of Nixon’s agents were thrown in jail but Agnew wasn’t after his plead. Both of these VPs were proven liars.
There are quite a few other similarities. With the exception of Johnson, all our Presidents from Roosevelt to Obama have earned great distinction for their accomplishments. I’ll excuse Carter because of the Iran hostage situation.

It is fun to watch the media matters propaganda trickle down over two days to this blog. The same brainwashed rhetoric was on msnbc yesterday. If that makes you feel better to blame Republicans for Obama’s first two years, go ahead, but not the truth. gas is up 85% since he took office and climbing. Food is up by my shopping bill 25%. The keystone pipeline would have helped, but again Obama caved to the extreme left. You guys cried about Gitmo, but not a word since Obama. You cried about water boarding but were silent when we killed our citizen in Yemen without trial. Under Bush , Obama criticized quantitative easing .Obama’s debt is his debt. Actually it is our debt and one of many factors why he is going to lose. He is far weaker then Carter. Kind of silly for me to try to argue with the brainwashed. Campaign Obama or occupy close the election with their May Chicago planned riots.

Mary – As usual you really jump to conclusions and make unfounded assumptions because one person disagrees on one issue: Automatically, that person MUST believe ALL that you disagree with? That’s silly and childish.
I did NOT ignore the killing of that American Citizen, but started a lively debate on a right wing website (humanevents.com) and I was roundly attacked (again with ASSumptions and jumping to conclusions) because they thought I supported his Muslim leanings, not that my objections had to do with The Constitution.
It’s hard to tell whether you even understand “Quantitative Easing” because you just shoot it out with not context, showing no understanding, but repeating someone else’s Slogan/Talking Point.
And this pre-occupation on “Brainwashed”? Mary, you repeat, word for word, the very same Slogans, Platitudes, Talking Points, etc. from Wilkow Majority, Sean Hannity, etc. with no additional input on your own. HOW does that make anyone else Brainwashed, but you NOT!?! I mean, what ‘NOT-BRAINWASHED’ individual believes so strongly in these “planned riots”!?!
It’s Ironic and disingenuous that you do not trust MSNBC (and you shouldn’t) BUT you swallow Hook, Line and Sinker all these highly Biased other sources – Isn’t the actual BIAS that should make us ALL suspicious and NOT TRUST such sources of information?
It seems you are only Comfortable making the most simplistic of accusations and observations when they allow no room for discussion; it is merely ‘Proclamations by Mary’ (who seems to NOT have the actual courage of her convictions enough to engage in a point-by-point debate on any of these given issues).
Also confusing is WHETHER The President DOES or DOES NOT have the ability and power to Set Gas Prices and to Create Jobs!?! Conventional GOP Wisdom is that he has NO such power or capability whatsoever, AND that it is not Government’s Role to even do so!
IF you took the time, issue by issue, to discuss instead of pontificate and accuse those who’ve not even SAID what you ascribe to them, you would be able to understand some of us are closer than you think (or do you fear that?), that you have ABSOLUTELY NO Monopoly on Understanding and loving The Constitution, including it’s highly important Case Law (have you read Constitutional Case Law? I have); and absolutely ZERO monopoly or claim on being a PATRIOT or TRUE AMERICAN.
Couching yourself, thus, is a neat trick to avoid any true discussion whereby you may be proven right or – gasp! – proven wrong. Either way, avoiding discussion – avoiding getting out there is a way of hiding, hiding a symptom of a kind of cowardice; do you so very much fear appearing Wrong? Or are you so very INSECURE in your Canned Slogans that you would not know how to follow up on them?
You’re plenty smart to think for yourself, so why do you insist on repeating the Propaganda, Talking Points and Slogans, Slogans, Slogans made up by OTHERS!?!
An awaiting Public of Readers is wondering…
As always, Mary, really vague Slogans like “blatant attack on religous freedom” are next to meaningless without explanation and rhetorical support. You take the easy way out by simply listing vague Slogans and Platitudes heard every single day on Hannity and Wilkow Majority and websites listed above.
Your shallow rhetoric about “you cried about Gitmo” and the like is speaking to WHOM, exactly? Do you have actual quotes from actual people you’re addressing, or just repeating what you have been told to think and say?
You fall into exactly the same rhetorical problems you accuse others of and most ALL of your Comments are so completely VAGUE, they have no context except for you to sound self-righteous, while hiding behind that vagueness so no one can actually challenge you on specifics, particulars and the like.
Truly, is it the Women’s PRIVATE right to her conscience when deciding whether to use contraceptive? Over 85% of Catholic Women DO use Contraceptives, so where is the “Blatant attack”?
And are we relying on the OH! So Moral Authority of Bishops who utterly FAILED to prevent or deal with (or NOT cover up!) the shameful sexual assaults and child rapes that occurred and occur within that same Church!?! Should Government KEEP OUT of THAT as well?

Con,
Maybe I can help you with the second to last paragraph in your post #15.
It IS a woman’s private right to decide whether or not she will use contraceptives. It does not matter one iota if 85% of Catholic women use contraceptives and 15% of Catholic women are against the use of contraceptives. Even if only 1% of all Catholic women in the U.S. follow the Church teaching regarding contraception, the issue must ALWAYS remain between each individual woman and her God (if she chooses to give God a say in the matter) and her Church (if she chooses to give her church a say in the matter). At no point in the decision is there EVER a place for the U.S. government to force a choice on a woman. That is EXACTLY what the HHS mandate will do. This is very different from the Church’s role in the woman’s decision. The Church tries to teach a Catholic woman what Scripture teaches and why she should choose to follow God’s will when she makes her decision. The Church does not FORCE her to decide one way or another. It issues teachings, but every Catholic still has the God-given free will to decide whether or not to follow a Church teaching. The Church teaches that there are consequences for choosing to go against Scripture and God’s will, but the final decision is always between an individual and God. In this instance, Obama and HHS are willing to step on a woman’s right to follow her Church teaching so it can support the women who do not wish to follow a Church teaching. The government has no right to get involved in such a matter and it DEFINITELY does not have a right to choose one side over another by virtue of government mandate.
Any woman in the U.S. who is employed by the Catholic church at any Catholic charitable organization, hospital, college, university, grade school, high school, homeless shelter, soup kitchen, Catholic media outlet – anywhere you can think of, will be forced to pay for someone else’s contraceptives when the use of contraceptives violates her religious beliefs and practice. As an employee, the Catholic Church (as her employer) will take payroll deductions from her salary/wages for her share of employee contributions toward premium payments for a health insurance policy that will be MANDATED to cover drugs and medical procedures that violate her religious beliefs.
That CAN NOT happen in the U.S. It is a blatant violation of the U.S. Constitution.
This is not even an issue about contraception and abortion. This is an issue about religious freedom being protected under our Consitution.
Take contraception out of this for a minute, if you will. Let’s use another example. How would you feel about this if under Obama, he allowed and even supported the U.S.D.A. to issue a mandate that all cafeterias in the U.S. that receive Federal subsidies must serve pork on Friday becaue pork is healthy and must be included in a well balanced diet funded by the U.S. government. That would violate the religious belief and conscience of every practicing Jew who relies on hot lunch at public school, hot lunch/dinner at any prison or VA hospital, or military base.
What if it came to light that 85% of Jews no longer keep kosher? Would that make a difference to the 15% who do keep kosher and would like their Consitutional right to keep kosher to remain protected by their President and government?
Would you have more sympathy in that example for the person who simply wants to protect their right to practice their religion as their religious leaders teach them to; as they believe they ought to?
Women who want contraceptives presently have access to them if they want them. If they don’t have the finacial resources to pay for them, contraceptives are available at reduced cost and in some cases, at no cost through Planned Parenthood. There’s no need to make it mandatory that insurance companies provide it free of charge and pass their cost onto those who don’t believe in it.
If Obama was really, sincerely interested in some sort of compromise, he would have given a waiver to religious insititutions. He gave the unions in his base waivers to opt out of Obamacare. He’s not opposed to helping his friends. In this case, it’s clear that he is much more friendly with the liberal womens’ rights lobby than he is with the Constitution and the Catholic Church.

Con,
The last paragraph of your post #15 is nothing more than a cheap shot – something you’ve been riding “Mary Mapes” for doing. Here’s is what you said,
“And are we relying on the OH! So Moral Authority of Bishops who utterly FAILED to prevent or deal with (or NOT cover up!) the shameful sexual assaults and child rapes that occurred and occur within that same Church!?! Should Government KEEP OUT of THAT as well?”
Anyone who breaks the law should be punished under the law. It is shameful that at one time, the Church protected criminals in its ranks. Those criminals were identified and removed from the Church. The abuse scandal was 10 years ago and it was hideous. At least lessons were learned. These days, if an accusation is made against a priest, that priest is immediately removed pending investigation. There’s no longer ANY presumption of innocence. These days a priest is presumed guilty and must prove his innocence to Church authorities and civil authorities.
Nowadays, the Church is one of the safest denominations to belong to. Every priest and even parent and other lay volunteers have to submit to a criminal background check and undergo training in a program called “Safe Environments” in order to work with children in a parish.
No one’s saying that covering up abuse was morally correct. Obviously it was not. Significant steps have been taken to see to it that such crimes don’t happen again or that they are immediately addressed if something should still slip through the cracks. The Church is now extremely vigilant in this area.
The answer to your question is simple:
Government should not “keep out” of criminal matters. Government should absolutely, 100% keep out of all legal Church teaching and activities without having to change the laws (like the current HHS mandate) in order for the government to gain a legal advantage over any one denomination or another.

Maybe they aren’t saying covering up was morally correct…but apparently some didnt think it was so bad.
Cardinal Law was shipped off to the Vatican so he would be out of reach of lawyers who wanted to depose him.
Doubtful,
I’m not defending what went on. I was merely pointing out to ‘Con’ that it had no place in the points ‘Con’ was trying to make about the HHS mandate. One has nothing to do with the other.
Newcomer,
Just to clarify, you first say that “the issue must ALWAYS remain between each individual woman and her God…and her Church” and “At no point in the decision is there EVER a place for the U.S. government to force a choice on a woman.” I haven’t heard any argument that the Government is forcing a choice directly on a woman – in what way is that happening? … (see Con’s new article. Admin).
